Welcome to my collection of Mattel Hot Wheels model reviews.

Of all the makes of diecast models, this is the one that I think is most confusing. This is a particular problem when they are the main licensee for the Ferrari diecast models which are very popular with adult collectors and children.

First, some models are promoted as Mattel while others are promoted as Hot Wheels when they are the same.

Second, there are three price-quality levels:

1) Super Elite – these are comparable with Autoart and Kyosho

2) Elite – it’s hard to find a direct comparison, Gt Autos perhaps but this is teh mid price, mid quality range. What I’d have thought of as very good quality for a high price before I became addicted to the hobby.

3) Standard – these are comparable in quality and price with Bburago, Maisto, Mondo, Welly etc

As a small collector, restricted by both space and money, I found it very frustrating trying to find out information about a car I was interested in because it was all so fragmented and some was very good, other bits very poor. For this brand, there was even more confusion because I was often unsure if I was looking at a bargain Elite or over-priced standard model.

This website is my attempt at trying to solve solve the problem for the range of Mattel Hot Wheels models.

1:18 Hot Wheels Batmobile 1966

My mother is in the process of moving house and one of my few remaining childhood toys is a very battered model of the is 1960s Batmobile. Hot Wheels have revived it and now have a 1:18 scale model of the 1966 Batmobile for sale.

This version of the Batmobile was based on the Lincoln Futura concept car from the mid 1950s.

Other versions of Batman’s car are available but I suspect that only true Batman fanatics will cross time periods. The rest of us will be attracted to the vehicle of our childhood.

Product Codes

There are two quality standards:

  • Heritage W1171
  • Elite BCJ95
  • There is also a chrome version also made by Hot Wheels Elite but I’m a traditionalist so it has to be in black as far as I’m concerned.

Quality in terms of diecast modelling using comes down to the level of detail and the quality of materials. Plastic may be used in the lower price models where the higher priced model has more diecast components. There may also be more opening parts in a better quality model but some of the most expensive, most detailed models are closed without any openings.

It often gets very confusing between the three levels of Hot Wheels Models and it’s usually important to check the product numbers. If you are dealing with a reputable supplier, they will be very clear price differences. It gets much harder to buy from eBay when descriptions are often not as tightly defined as they should be.

These have an extra level of detail and are significantly more expensive.

  • T8422 Italia red
  • X5491 Italia GT2 Launch red

Non Elite aka Heritage or Foundation

These models are cheaper than the Elites but the level of detail isn’t as good and sometimes the bonnet and boots don’t open.

  • T6921 Italia black
  • BLY55 Speciale red

  • BCJ77 Italia GT2 red

Product Numbers For The Hot Wheels Ferrari 612 Scaglietti

This gets confusing because there are three levels of Hot Wheels models for this car and that makes it harder to decide if you’re buying a bargain or you’re being asked to overpay.

There is a standard Hot Wheels model, there is an Elite version and there is an Elite Special Edition (aka super elite).

  • L7120 – this is the HWE special edition of the 612 Scaglietti Sessanta
  • L7127 – HWE Race China edition
  • L7129 – HWE 15000 Red Miles
  • P9918 – HWE Sessanta

There are also standard Hot Wheels models available of the 612 Scaglietti which look better than the current Heritage (non-elite) models that are being produced. It seems that the bonnet and boot open on these models.

  • C7524 – pewter
  • B6047 – red
  • H3062 – blue
  • M1196 – silver/black

Hot Wheels have also made a 1:43 scale model.

Hot Wheels Elite models:

  • L2985 – red – limited to 5,000
  • L2988 – blue – limited to 5,000
  • P9912 – brown Steve McQueen edition – limited to 5,000
  • T6254 – silver Eric Clapton edition – limited to 5,000

Hot Wheels also make the model car in 1:43 scale. There was also a standard version of the Lusso produced which is less detailed. I haven’t seen it offered new but you need to be careful and especially if you’re looking at a second-hand model.

The silver Eric Clapton is fairly easy to find at the time of writing but the others are more difficult.
