Ford Mustang

This is an introductory article about the Ford Mustang where Ford created a new type of sports coupé – the pony car with the “long hood, short deck”.

The Mustang has been in continued production since 1964 although, unlike the Porsche 911, it has gone through some big design changes.

American cars have made little impact on the UK and Europe in the 1960s and 70s. The Mustang and Corvette were at least recognised and treated with interest while the larger cars were dismissed.

There have been six generations of Mustang:

  • First (1964–1973)
  • Second (1974–1978)
  • Third (1979–1993)
  • Fourth (1994–2004)
  • Fifth (2005–2014)
  • Sixth (2014-)
