The Ferrari 250 GTO is a legendary car that has become the most expensive car in the world. In October 2013, chassis number 5111GT sold for a new record of $52 million, beating the $35 million paid in May 2012 for another GTO.
What makes the car so special?
36 cars were made in 1962 and 1963 in the series 1 of this car designed to compete in the Group 3 Grand Touring Car races. To qualify, cars had to be sold for road use. 3 series II cars with a slightly different body were made in 1964 making a total of just 39 GTOs. The company was supposed to make at least 100 but used the trick of leaving gas in the chassis numbers to suggest cars that didn’t existy.
The 250 GTO was based on the 250 GT SWB. Ferrari’s chief engineer, Giotto Bizzarrini installed the 3.0 litre V12 engine from the racing car, the 250 Testa Rossa and worked with Sergio Scaglietti to design the body. Three cars used the 4 litre 330 engine and are sometimes called the 330 GTO.
